Shoppers were evacuated from Churchill Square shopping centre in Brighton after a fire alarm went off.
Four fire engines attended and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that firefighters carried out a check of the shopping centre.
But she said that there was no fire and that it was “an alarm activation issue”.
Dan Wilson, one of several Twitter users to share news of the evacuation, tweeted: “Traffic and bus chaos at Churchill Square. Avoid.”
The shopping centre plans to extend its Sunday opening hours during the Olympics and Paralympic Games. From Sunday 22 July Churchill Square will open from 10am until 6pm on for eight weeks.
