A 27-year-old man from Portslade has been flown to hospital in London after his car crashed into a tree in Hassocks this afternoon (Friday 26 August).
The man was driving a blue BMW on the A273 Brighton Road when the accident happened just south of the Stonepound crossroads at about 1pm.
No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.
The roads to and from the junction were closed while a helicopter landed and took the seriously injured driver to the Royal London Hospital.
They remained closed afterwards as traffic officers began their investigation and the Highways Agency made the road safe.
Anyone who saw the accident or who saw the car just before it left the road is asked to call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999.
