Clydesdale Bank 40, Scarborough
Yorkshire Carnegie 302-4 beat Sussex Sharks 267 by 35 runs
By Jack Bradshaw
Sussex failed to take their chance to qualify for the semi-finals of the Clydesdale Bank 40 in a 35-run defeat at the hands strugglers Yorkshire.
Jacques Rudolph hit a sublime 132 not out, his second century in two days, as Yorkshire built a strong innings having been put in by Sussex captain Michael Yardy.
Adam Lyth (73) and Jonny Bairstow (52) both struck half-centuries in good time as the hosts posted an impressive 302-4 from their 40 overs.
Needing only one more win to secure their place in the last four, Sussex faltered in their run chase quickly slipping to 80-4.
But Yardy (53) and Ben Brown (60) carried on their impressive form from earlier in the week and led the fight-back.
And a blistering 47 off 28 balls from Wayne Parnell gave the visitors a slim chance of victory.
But the hosts continued to pick up regular wickets as the Sharks were eventually dismissed for 267, leaving them 35 runs short of their target with 19 balls to spare.
Group A leaders Sussex will be looking to make sure they advance next time out against Kent at Hove on Tuesday (23 August).
