Car owners are being asked not to try to sell their cars in streets in Brighton and Hove where others have “for sale” signs.
Trading standards officers have been responding to complaints from people living in streets such as Portland Road, Hove, and Elm Grove in Brighton.
The complaints have been prompted by the sheer number of cars parked in those streets with “for sale” signs.
Brighton and Hove City Council said that anyone who placed two or more cars for sale in the same street could receive a £100 fixed penalty charge or a fine of up to £2,500.
Councillor Ben Duncan, the council’s cabinet member for communities, equalities and public protection, said: “It really makes a difference to the environment when large numbers of these vehicles are parked up in one area.
“We urge people to consider the impact of their actions on residents living near by.
“We’d love to be able to do more about this.
“Our streets are the hubs of our communities but as long as cars are taxed and parked lawfully we have no choice but to appeal to the private sellers’ better nature and sense of shared community.”
