A bus had to reverse for almost a quarter of a mile up a narrow road in Hove last night after the driver appeared to forget that it was closed to traffic.
Ironically, Elm Drive in Hangleton is closed while a bus stop is being relaid – and has a sign at the top warning that the road ahead is closed.
Brighton and Hove Buses shared details of the road closure widely but the driver of a number 5 turned into Elm Drive from Hangleton Road by the Grenadier pub yesterday evening.
Soon after, she came to a halt by the crossroads at Maytree Walk and Laburnum Avenue, unable to go any further.
A man, believed to be an off-duty bus driver, helped her reverse delicately back up the section of street that is usually one-way only.
The road is due to reopen to traffic on Thursday (18 August).
