A cheeky offer by animal campaigners to place adverts on the side of dustcarts has been turned down by the council.
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) offered to pay for ads saying: “Go Green: Bin Meat.”
The offer followed the rejection of “meat-free Mondays” in the binmen’s canteen at the Hollingdean depot.
But a spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: “While we appreciate the offer by PETA and wish them well in their campaign, we think it’s appropriate to respect people’s choice of food.
“Our meat-free Mondays campaign is about raising awareness of the health and environmental benefits of not eating meat.
“But we are not in the business telling them what they can and cannot eat.
“We are putting our focus on offering staff alternatives.
“In the past week our canteen has started to offer an extensive range of non-meat options alongside meat dishes and they are proving to be very popular.”
The Green Party included a commitment in its local elections manifesto in Brighton and Hove to “introduce meat-free Mondays in all council catering establishments”.
