Three people, including a pregnant woman, were treated in hospital after breathing in smoke as fire swept through flats in Brighton early this morning.
The alarm was raised when a smoke alarm went off, waking an elderly resident and alerting him to the fire in his flat in Cowley Drive, Woodingdean.
The man and his dog escaped from the ground floor flat before the blaze took hold.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service received a 999 call at 1.56am and crews from Roedean and Preston Circus attended.
Three pumps were needed to put out the fire, which caused major damage.
Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended.
Everyone in the building, which contains four flats, was accounted for.
Firefighter Chris Baker said: “The man told me he was woken up by his smoke alarm.
“I’ve no doubt the outcome of the fire would have been far more serious if it hadn’t been set off.
“There’s a good chance the smoke alarm saved lives in this particular instance.
“It’s an important reminder for people to ensure they have smoke alarms fitted.
“If you already have them fitted, make sure you check they are working on a weekly basis by pushing the test button.
“If you know of anyone who may be vulnerable and would benefit from one of our free home safety visits, then please give us a call 08001 777069.”
The last fire engine left the scene at 4.39am. The fire is thought to have started accidentally.
