Brighton and Hove commuters suffered long delays for a second time this week – this time on the roads.
Thousands of drivers were held up for hours after a lorry crashed into the central reservation on the M25 near the junction with the M23.
Three people were seriously injured and part of the road was covered in spilt diesel after the accident involving an HGV and a Nissan Micra.
Earlier in the week a landslip closed the railway line just south of East Croydon, preventing trains from bringing people home from London Bridge and Victoria.
The lorry crash happened just after 4pm this afternoon (Friday 5 August) and at one stage traffic was reported to be queuing for 28 miles.
The M25 was closed both ways between Junction 7, the M23 turn-off, and Junction 8, the Reigate turn-off.
There was also traffic disruption on the M23 as queues of drivers wanting to join the M25 had to take detours.
Drivers were being urged to use alternative routes after the accident on the anti-clockwise side of the road.
They were being warned that the road could be closed for up to eight hours while the diesel spill was cleared and the road and central reservation were repaired.
Later drivers were allowed to use the hard shoulder and those who had been trapped because junctions had been closed were allowed to use them to leave the motorway.
