Sussex Police arrested two men in Brighton yesterday (Wednesday 3 August) on suspicion of burglary and stealing a car.
The arrests followed a chase through Bevendean after a tip-off by a member of the public.
The alert passer-by reported seeing three masked men in a parked car near the post office in Widdicombe Way at about 3.15pm.
Sussex Police said that officers, including firearms officers, searched the area with support from the police helicopter.
They spotted the car that had been reported to them – a silver BMW 5 series sport model which had been reported stolen in a burglary in Brighton recently.
Police chased the car along Southall Avenue until the men abandoned the BMW and drove off in a Mazda 4×4 which had been parked there.
The Mazda sped away but was found abandoned near by in Kimberley Road soon afterwards.
After further searches two men were arrested in the surrounding streets, including Ladysmith Road.
Sussex Police said that no firearms were seen or found and there were no reports of anyone being injured.
A spokesman for the force added: “Thanks to a call from a member of the public, police were able to take swift action. Inquiries are continuing.”
