A brave shop worker grappled with one of two armed robbers as they tried to hold up a jewellers in Portslade this afternoon (Monday 11 July).
And as the hammer-wielding masked men fled empty-handed, Sussex Police said that members of the public may have given chase and taken photographs of the crooks on their mobile phones.
A 34-year-old man was arrested near by in Victoria Road, Portslade, on suspicion of trying to rob James Ross Jewellers in Station Road, Portslade, at about 2pm.
The shop worker who struggled with one of the robbers was shaken but unhurt.
Sussex Police said that officers were continuing their search for the other suspect and believe that he may have escaped from Gordon Road – behind Tesco – in a silver hatchback car.
Officers believe that members of the public may have chased the men into an alleyway at the side of the shop and taken photos of them on their mobile phones.
Anyone who has any photos of the suspects or has any other relevant information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999.
