Hove MP Mike Weatherley had his pulse checked yesterday (Monday 6 June) to raise awareness of the Know Your Pulse campaign.
Arrhythmia Alliance, the heart rhythm charity, said that if enough people knew their pulse more than 8,000 lives could be saved each year.
NHS staff and volunteers run free pulse checks across the country including at Hove Polyclinic.
They aim to raise awareness about irregular heartbeats.
Mr Weatherley said: “It’s hard to imagine a test that is easier than taking your own pulse yet most people probably never do it.
“I was astonished to learn that of the 150,000 strokes per year in the UK, one in five is due to an irregular pulse.
“I would urge everyone to get their pulse checked – I’ll be checking mine regularly from now on.”
