The Labour and Co-operative Party group on Brighton and Hove City Council has announced the make up of its team.
Group leader Gill Mitchell will be Labour’s spokesman on transport and the public realm and the environment and sustainability.
Councillor Mitchell, who represents East Brighton, will aim to promote Labour policy and scrutinise the way the Green administration runs the council.
She believes that supported bus routes, parking, rail fare rises and recycling rates will be among the key issues.
Councillor Warren Morgan, who also represents East Brighton, is one of the group’s two deputy leaders.
He will be the party’s spokesman on planning, economic development and regeneration and communities and community safety.
Councillor Morgan believes that rising unemployment, the proposed closure of Hove Police Station and Sussex Police cuts are among the keys upcoming issues.
He will also be looking at ways of keeping Brighton and Hove unique and monitoring the proposals for the i360, Black Rock, King Alfred and Shoreham Harbour.
Councillor Les Hamilton, who represents South Portslade, will be the group’s spokesman on finance and central services with the council’s budget and government spending cuts likely to dominate his workload.
Councillor Brian Fitch, who represents Hangleton and Knoll, is the spokesman on culture, recreation and tourism.
He will focus on tough times in leisure industry, the Brighton Centre redevelopment and the Brighton Wheel.
Councillor Anne Pissaridou, who represents Wish, will speak on adult social care and health, focusing on personalised budgets, our ageing population and NHS reform.
Councillor Mo Marsh, who represents Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, will lead on children and young people, focusing on cuts to services, the scrapping of the education maintenance allowance and the new Portslade Academy.
Councillor Leigh Farrow, who also represents Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, will be the housing spokesman.
Councillor Farrow will focus on the Strategic City Housing Plan, the shortage of affordable homes and sites for new housing, empty homes and issues around houses converted to flats or bedsits.
Council Bob Carden, who represents North Portslade, will lead on planning and Councillor Jeane Lepper, who represents Hollingdean and Stanmer, will lead on licensing.
Councillor Mitchell said: “They are a talented team of individuals from right across the city, who I know will do all they can to listen to local people and stand up for Brighton and Hove in these challenging times.”
