The Greens have won their first two seats of the election in Brunswick and Adelaide which returned two Liberal Democrats last time.
New Green councillor Phelim Mac Cafferty said: “This is the worst result the Lib Dems have had since the 1980s. This gives us a strong sign that the policies Nick Clegg and the Coalition have pursued aren’t popular.
“People don’t wan’t huge cuts. We campaigned on an anti-cuts ticket and we believe this was central to why we have been elected and the Lib Dems haven’t.”
The Lib Dems look likely to be left with no seats on the council for the first time since it was created.
New councillor Ollie Sykes, who won the other seat for the Green Party, said: “We’ve spoken to a huge number of people in Brunswick and Adelaide and we’ve developed a good idea of their concerns.
“This is a huge vote of confidence for the Green Party.”
