A cyclist has been seriously injured in a crash with a car in Hove this evening.
He was hit by a black Toyota Yaris at about 6.35pm today (Monday 2 May) in Old Shoreham Road, Hove, at the junction with The Upper Drive.
Sussex Police said that the cyclist, a 33-year-old local man, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
The driver of the Yaris, a 22-year-old Hove man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and taken to the police cell block in Hollingbury for interview.
He has been released on police bail until Friday 10 June.
Traffic was diverted while police investigated the incident.
A new traffic light system with pelican crossing controls has recently been installed at the junction after a petition by parents last year asked for safety improvements.
The junction is close to Cardinal Newman Catholic School, Cottesmore St Mary’s Catholic School and Brighton and Hove High School’s junior school.
Brighton, Hove And Sussex VI Form College (BHASVIC) is also near by.
Anyone who saw the crash is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999.
