A family from Hove had a lucky escape when a barbecue which had been left to cool down set fire to their home in the small hours of the morning.
A neighbour spotted the fire and rang 999.
Four fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were sent to tackle the blaze in Davigdor Road, Hove, in the early hours of Sunday (10 April).
It was only when the fire crews arrived that those in the flat realised that it was on fire.
The fire crews spent nearly four hours putting out the blaze and making the area safe after arriving at about 4.40am.
Preston Circus Station Commander Tony Gurr said: “They had finished the barbecue and had left it to cool down.
“It was a kind neighbour who saw it and contacted East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
“It was only when a firefighter knocked on the door and woke them that they realised there was a fire.
“The fire started on the balcony and worked its way in through the eaves and into the loft space.
“The family had a very lucky escape.
“If you are using a barbecue please ensure they are put out at the end of the evening or placed in a safe place where the risk of fire is significantly reduced.
“We have also seen people having barbecues on the beach and they then put them in the bin where they can start smouldering among the rubbish.
“All it needs is heat and then it will start to ignite – especially in hot weather.
“Please be mindful to put them out at the end of the day and dispose of them safely.”
