Saltdean Lido has had its listed status upgraded.
The change – from Grade II to Grade II* listed status – was announced by the Conservative Minister for Tourism and Heritage John Penrose.
Campaigners to save the lido hope that it will give greater protection to the 1930s Art Deco complex in Saltdean Park Road, Brighton.
They pushed for the change after leaseholder Dennis Audley announced plans to fill in the swimming pool and build 102 flats on the site.
The Friends of Saltdean Lido, Saltdean Residents Association and Saltdean Community Association have all supported the Save Saltdean Lido Campaign.
And Simon Kirby, the Conservative MP for Brighton Kemptown, joined the cause, writing to the minister and to English Heritage calling for the upgraded listing.
Last night he said: “I am delighted for local residents that the higher listing has been achieved.
“This will give added protection to the lido and will enable any inappropriate development to be resisted.
“This is a great day for the lido.”
