HOVE firefighter Rob Negus is one of six specially-trained West Sussex firefighters flying to New Zealand to help victims of the earthquake that struck Christchurch on Tuesday, February 22.
The crew from West Sussex Fire and Rescue’s technical rescue unit based in Horley, are part of a UK team that was due to fly out from Heathrow late yesterday, but are still waiting for a flight.
The New Zealand government has accepted an offer of assistance from the UK with an unknown number of people reported killed, injured or trapped in collapsed buildings.
The main team of 60+ search and rescue specialists, doctors and medical teams is flying from Gatwick today (Wednesday, February 23) on a plane chartered by the UK government.
Other fire and rescue service teams responding include West Midlands, Hampshire, Leicestershire, Grampian, South Wales, Essex, and Cheshire.
