The man shot by police in Rock Place, Brighton, yesterday (Thursday, February 10) has been named as 49-year-old-Michael Fitzpatrick.
His identity was released by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) today (Friday, February 11)
A post-mortem examination is due to take place this afternoon.
An inquest is due to be opened and adjourned at Brighton and Hove Coroner’s Court at a date to be confirmed.
Fitzpatrick was shot by police just after 1pm yesterday, and died from his injuries in Royal Sussex County Hospital.
The armed officers were deployed on a pre-planned operation as he was wanted in connection with a number of armed robberies in Sussex over recent months.
Fitzpatrick was wanted in connection with armed robberies in Burgess Hill – at Post Offices in Leylands Road on December 14 and Church Walk on January 24; and an attempted robbery at the Santander bank in Church Road on January 21.
On each occasion a man threatened staff with a gun and demanded cash.
Detectives are also looking at whether he was linked to a series of Post Office robberies in Brighton and Hove.
The same branch in Melville Road was robbed three times on September 27, October 4 and December 9; and on January 6 a man robbed the Post Office in Western Road, Hove.
Sussex Police has also confirmed that the officers most directly involved in the incident have been taken off operational firearms duties for 28 days in line with Force policy.
In a statement yesterday Superintendent Steve Whitton of Sussex Police said: “What appears to be a black handgun has been found at the scene.
“It will now be made safe and examined by the IPCC to establish whether it is real or an imitation weapon and whether it had been fired.”
