Students held a demonstration to protest about proposed rises in tuition fees and cuts to maintenance grants outside Brighton Town Hall yesterday.
The abolition of the education maintenance allowance (EMA) is expected to make it harder for poorer students in particular to attend courses at places such as City College Brighton and Hove.
About 70 students took part in the protest in Bartholomew Square, Brighton, although Brighton and Hove City Council is not responsible for either the tuition fee rises or the grant cuts.
Dozens of officers from Sussex Police were present. There was no trouble and no arrests were made during the demonstration which lasted for about an hour.
