Artists can compete for £20,000 to design a canopy to shelter the doorway of new flats in Hove.
But they have only seven days to say why they should be given the commission to design and instal their work.
The building – Block E in Caister’s Close off The Upper Drive in Hove – was designed by Brighton architect Nick Lomax.
Mr Lomax, of LCE Architects in Western Road, Brighton, is best known for designing the Jubilee Library in Brighton.
The block in Caister’s Close contains 16 flats built on the site of two houses, now demolished, that were owned by the boxer Chris Eubank.
Southern Housing, of Church Road, Hove, is behind the commission which calls for a site-specific and original work of art.
Artists are asked to be mindful of the maintenance obligations that their work will require.
They have until 5pm next Friday (14 January) to send in their CV, evidence of comparable work and a supporting statement.
Their expressions of interest should be sent to James Halliday, in the Arts and Culture Team at Brighton and Hove City Council, who is overseeing the selection process.
His email address is james.halliday@brighton-hove.gov.uk and his postal address is James Halliday, Brighton and Hove City Council, Arts and Culture, King’s House, Grand Avenue, Hove, BN3 2LS.
The final decision will be made by a selection committee consisting of
- Three to four residents from Block E
- A representative from the council’s Arts and Culture Team
- A senior planning consultant from the council
- A representative from Southern Housing.
- A Goldsmid ward councillor
Shortlisted entrants will be notified in early February and will be paid a small fee to develop specific ideas within a three-week period.
Entrants will then be invited to present their ideas to a panel in late February or early March.
The aim is for the canopy to be installed in June or July.
