Thousands of people have headed out of Brighton and Hove to spend Bonfire Night in Lewes, their enthusiasm not visibly dampened by the autumn mist and drizzle.
But a few thousand more are spending the evening at two local fireworks displays.
Sussex Police helped to shut Lewes to traffic from 5pm and, even before then, plenty had set off from Brighton by train.
In Brighton, however, the main display will shortly be under way at the Racecourse.
The singer Olly Murs – runner-up in the final of the ITV talent show X-Factor last year – is due to make an appearance there.
In Hove big crowds are expected as usual at the Sussex County Cricket Ground in Eaton Road despite the dismal weather.
The weather outlook is kinder for the fireworks display at the Nevill Playing Fields in Hove tomorrow evening. The wind is expected to have dropped and the rain to hold off although the temperature is likely to be below 10C even at 6.30pm when the display begins. Heavy rain and strong winds are expected on Monday.
