The cost of dealing with unauthorised camps being set up around Brighton and Hove totals about £180,000 a year.

The figures were revealed by Brighton and Hove City Council in response to a freedom of information (FoI) request.

Details of the request and the council’s reply have been posted on an FoI website called What Do They Know?

The council said that about 60 illegal camps had been set up at more than 20 sites around Brighton and Hove this year,

Among the locations where Irish Travellers, English Gypsies, or van dwellers have camped are

  • Benfield Valley
  • Black Rock and Madeira Drive
  • Land off Ditchling Road
  • Land off Devil’s Dyke Road
  • Manor Hill
  • Carden Park
  • East Brighton Park
  • Greenleas Recreation Ground
  • Wild Park
  • Sheepcote Valley
  • Waterhall playing fields
  • Woollards Field in Moulsecoomb

The council said: “Where an unauthorised encampment remains, we instruct our contractor to visit the site on a regular basis to empty the bins, remove any other

waste and to carry out regular litter picks and to generally keep the site clean and tidy.

“The total costs associated with the keeping an encampment clean and tidy or the removal of waste after land has been vacated, were approximately £88,692 in 2009-10.

“The Traveller Liaison Team comprises three full-time and one part-time staff.

“Salary costs for this financial year are £91,080.”

ohh wow the traveling community are back in brighton Wild Park in Moulsecoomb i wonder if it was money issues that mean that little preventative bump hump along Wild Park in Moulsecoomb , its going to cost the council a lot more now to remove them / clear up after the travelers have gone ..
