Campaigners in Brighton and Hove are ready to make their views known about the cuts expected in the Chancellor’s spending review today.
Brighton Stop the Cuts Coalition said that it was building a united fight-back against the cuts agenda with a wave of protests, lobbies and demonstrations over the next ten days.
Today protesters are planning to unfurl a banner outside the Churchill Square shopping centre in Brighton at 4pm.
A statement from the campaigners – organised by trade union branches affiliated to Brighton Trades Council – said: “Locally, the Tory-run council continue to plan cuts to our Connexions youth support services, Sure Start help, housing budgets and the closure of Bright Start Nursery.
“And these cuts will be just the start after today’s comprehensive spending review with the results being passed on to local councils to implement.
“Thousands of jobs and hundreds of public services used by everyone are at risk across the city, but we will not take these unjustified attacks lying down.”
The statement said that in Brighton and Hove the trades council had already been at the forefront in organising local trade union branches.
It said that by setting up the Brighton Stop the Cuts Coalition it had already been able to win small victories with united pressure on councillors.
Its supporters intend to lobby the Brighton and Hove City Council full council meeting tomorrow (Thursday 21 October).
The statement said that debates would be held tomorrow by the council on the threat to Connexions, Portslade Community College and the in-year cuts already announced.
On Saturday 30 October a Brighton March Against Cuts demonstration is scheduled to assemble on The Level at noon before marching through the city to protest against cuts.
i understand it will also include a reference to saving the argus ==
The NUJ meeting has an meeting , probably in the Asda car park, at 1pm on Thursday.
“As long predicted, the Brighton Argus has declared its intention to move the
bulk of editorial production to Southampton . Only two sub-editors will remain
at the Brighton office if the plans go ahead. This not only means the loss of
six jobs locally, but jeopardises the quality of the Argus’s coverage of the
news. You may not think it’s good now, but believe me it can get worse.”
Do people not realise that there really is no choice in this?
The over spending was that stupid. There is NO money. No one will lend us money in the future… Our debt repayments alone in 2015 will be the size of the whole of the NHS budget even if they implement these cuts.
These are not cost savings as that implies we have the money to fund them as they are.
We simply don’t.
How can 54% of the work force trace their income back to government money?
How can you tax the top 10% any more than they are as they already contribute over 70% of the tax income?
You only have to have a household income of 42000 to be in the top 10%.
Its a mess.
Thank you Tony Blair and thank you Gordon Brown.
Our children’s children will still be paying off the debts you have incurred to try and stay in power for the next 50 years.
You don’t have a welfair state unless you have the money to support it.
People should wake up, place blame where it is deserved and thats with the last government.
