A 70-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman from Brighton have been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress, following a police appeal.
Police released CCTV images in the hope of identifying a man and woman wanted for racially abusing a Brighton woman of European appearance as she travelled with her five and seven-year-old children on the 81 bus on Monday 14 June.
PC Tash Swan said: “I received endless responses following the appeal in the media and I would like to thank everyone who contacted me.
“I hope the support from the local community is of some comfort to the victim, who was left highly distressed by the experience, particularly as she was with her young children at the time.”
The man and woman were arrested in Brighton on Friday 20 August and released on bail until Thursday 23 September.
It seems Eastern Europeans are in the bigots’ spotlight once again: I’ve been mistaken for a European migrant worker/foreign student myself a few times, despite not having (to my knowledge) any close ancestors from that part of the world.
It seems a certain type of bone structure and slim appearance might be enough to trigger a racist incident, so watch out folks.
Glad the Sussex police take these comments seriously. Why the obsession with other people’s ethnic background in this country?
This case shows us that CCTV has its uses – pity the Tories want to get rid of many of these cameras.
