The highest profile St George’s event in Brighton on Sunday was undoubtedly the March for England, which caused major disruption and ended in nine arrests.
But a smaller event celebrated the English patron saint’s day in a much more peaceful, happy and quirky way.
The Book and the Rose marked both St George’s Day and Shakespeare’s birthday with a series of readings from authors and poets in Jubilee Square.
Phil Gardner’s Mulled Whines blog has these two accounts of what he and his family made of it, including videos. First, he compares it with the March for England.
In the second, he says how surprised he was to enjoy a Shakespeare Soliloquy slam.
