A van driver has been jailed for nine months for killing a Portslade father.
Delshad Aziz, 27, admitted causing death by careless driving today at Hove Crown Court.
His van crashed into Anthony Edney’s moped at the junction of the A270 Old Shoreham Road and The Drive, Hove, on June 25, 2009.
Mr Edney, of Thornhill Road, Portslade, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where he died from his injuries.
Aziz, of New Road East, Portsmouth, who had previously pleaded guilty to causing death whilst unlicensed and causing death whilst uninsured, was also disqualified from driving for three years and will have to sit an extended test to gain a licence in the future.
Sgt Paul Wood from the Brighton and Hove Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts at this time are with the family and friends of Anthony Edney.
“This tragic incident, which should never have happened, has left Maria without a husband and two children without a father. Any sentence passed would never be sufficient to replace their loss.
“This was a collision that should never have happened. Aziz was unlicenced and uninsured and should never have been behind the wheel of motor vehicle.
“We will continue to pursue and prosecute motorists who drive without insurance and a licence and offenders can expect to be dealt with robustly.”
