A Brighton woman has been fined for repeatedly playing loud music, including the theme tune to the 1970s cartoon the Banana Splits.
Neighbours of Amanda Millard got so fed up with listening to the zany song, they contacted the council’s environmental health team.
Last Friday, Millard, of Pope’s Court, Freehold Terrace, was found guilty of breaching a noise abatement notice and was fined £250.
Brighton Magistrates heard that Millard’s neighbours had been subjected to excessively loud music intermittently over a three year period. Brighton & Hove City Council’s noise patrol visited the flats on several occasions, and witnessed songs including House of the Rising Sun, You Want to be a Rock Star, Buffalo Soldier and Never Been so Beautiful Before played at full volume.
Despite warning letters and a Noise Abatement Notice, Millard failed to turn the volume down.
Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, cabinet member for environment, said: “The neighbours of Ms Millard have clearly been subjected to unacceptable levels of noise for a long period of time which has had a serious effect on their quality of life and wellbeing.
“We are pleased that our environmental health officers have been able to work with the victims to gather the evidence and to bring the matter before the courts.
“This sends out a clear message that this council will not tolerate noise nuisance and will prosecute those responsible.”
