Sussex Police is set to take its officers out of starched white shirt collars in favour of a more relaxed zip-up black polo tops.
It is thought the uniform’s current trousers will also be exchanged for a combat style, with pockets down the legs.
However, controversial changes to the distinctive helmet are less likely to come into force.
Writing in the Preston Pages, Inspector Rob Leet said the clothing swap was down to comfort, practicality – and cost.
He said: “The new tops are designed to be worn underneath our protective body armour and will be much more comfortable, durable and cooler than the cotton shirts we wear at present.
“Whilst many members of the public may lament the loss of the more ‘smart’ image of a shirt and tie, these changes do bring the police uniform into the 21st century.”
But he was keen to retain the helmet, adding: “Speak to a citizen of most countries in the world and the head-wear of the Great British Bobby will be one of the main things that they associate with the UK.
“As brands go, it’s a stronger one than any multi-national conglomerate could ever dream of. To replace it would be criminal!”
A spokesman for Sussex Police told the Brighton and Hove News arrangements for the new uniform are now being finalised, and an announcement is expected next month.
