Sainsbury’s wants its new Local store in Portland Road, Hove, to be open round the clock.
The supermarket giant, which is also planning to open stores in Western Road, Hove, and Preston Road, Preston Village, announced its intention to open the Portland Road store on the site of Reflections Bathrooms in October.
A 24-hour premises licence application for the store will now be considered by Brighton and Hove City Council Licensing Committee on Monday 11 January. Sainsbury’s is also asking to serve alcohol from 6am to 11pm.
The store is one of several applications from both Sainsbury’s and Tesco which are being made ahead of an anticipated clampdown on new store openings by the supermarket giants.
Tesco has recently opened a store in St James’s Street, Kemp Town, and has plans for another in Lewes Road, Brighton.
All the proposed stores have been opposed by residents, whether through petitions, Facebook groups or letters to the council.
At the time of writing, 2,348 people had joined this Facebook group protesting against Tesco’s plans for a convenience store on the site of a community garden in Lewes Road, for which it already has planning permission.
