A swimmer who ventured into the stormy waves at Saltdean in the early hours of this morning thanked police who were trying to help him by throwing stones at them.
The officers called out the RNLI Brighton lifeboat after the man entered the water at about 2am.
An RNLI spokesman said: “Brighton Lifeboat was launched but given the appalling conditions, did not proceed further than the marina entrance until updated information on the target’s situation was available.”
After the man left the water, the lifeboat was stood down.
