A man’s body has been found on a Brighton beach near the Palace Pier, Sussex Police said this afternoon (Saturday 30 September).
The force said at lunchtime: “Following an extensive search for a 28-year-old man reported missing in the sea near Brighton’s Palace Pier on Saturday morning (30 September), a body was discovered on the beach just west of the pier.
“Sadly, it is believed to be that of the missing man.
“The coroner’s officer has been notified and next of kin informed.”
A man in just his boxer shorts was reported to have gone into the sea just east of the pier at about 7.30am.
The coastguard helicopter, the Brighton and Shoreham RNLI lifeboats and Sussex Police were all involved in a search of the sea and shore for more than three hours.
During the search, the coastguard helicopter was diverted to the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm for a medical evacuation.
A man was flown to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, in Brighton, although it was not clear whether the man had had a medical emergency or an accident.
