Sussex Police detectives are trying to trace the owner of a blue Renault Scenic.
The car was seen near a Brighton church just before it caught fire in what was believed to have been an arson attack.
The police appeal relates to the investigation into the fire at the Greek Orthodox Church in Carlton Hill, Brighton, which broke out on the afternoon of Sunday 4 July.
Sussex Police said: “The blaze quickly spread through the church building and completely gutted the whole interior.
“An area of the church used as a classroom for children was completely destroyed along with all their equipment and work.”
Detectives said that the Renault was seen near the church between 2.20pm and 2.35pm just before the fire was reported.
They want to speak to the owner so that he or she can be eliminated from the inquiry.
The owner and anyone with information can contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999.
