More details of plans to regenerate a huge seafront site which has laid empty for a decade have been revealed.
A gym has been proposed to fill a large ground floor section of The Terraces, the complex above the Sea Life Centre, in Madeira Drive, Brighton.
It follows plans revealed by Brighton Seafront Regeneration Ltd in February to renovate the building’s exterior and open a fine dining restaurant on the first floor.
Details of new uses for other sections of the complex are expected to follow.
The 50,000 sq ft Terraces, in a prime spot close to the Palace Pier, was redeveloped by Compco in 2000 but many of its units have never been filled.
They include a vast space on the ground floor and basement where superclub Cream once planned to open a 1,750 capacity nightspot.
If planning permission is granted by Brighton and Hove City Council part of that area will become the sports centre.
It would be run by The Gym, which already operates eight branches across the country in cities including London, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.
The plans includes replacing the boarded up ground floor windows with a glass frontage.
A separate application has been submitted by Brighton Seafront Regeneration Ltd to demolish a glass pavilion on top of the complex.
The council is expected to decide on the plans by June.
It would be good if they could also get rid of that terrible eyesore of a roof!
